Objectives and content: The study subject “General English A0” is an introduction to studies of the English language at VSEM. The aim of the course is to familiarize with elementary and pre-intermediate areas of the English grammar and vocabulary. At the end, students are going to be able to use English in the most frequent situations of daily life.
The basic method used is working on exercices of various kinds. Students should master the Enlgish language at the A2-B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, a level necessary to be able to  attend the course called "A1" of VSEM.

  • definite and indefinite article, usage
  • present simple, present continuous, past simple, expressing future; verbs “to BE” and “to HAVE” in various tenses
  • imperative, present conditional, invinitive
  • modal verbs “CAN”, “MUST” a “MAY”, past simple forms of regular and irregular verbs, words derived from verbs
  • nouns, plural form, countable and uncountable nouns, words derived from nouns
  • adjectives, forming comparatives and superlatives, MUCH vs. MANY, LITTLE vs. FEW
  • expression o ftime and place in an English sentence
  • negation, expressions “THERE IS” and “THERE ARE”, expression of the Czech “že”, “že ano”, “že ne”; expressions “SOME”, “ANY”, “NO”
  • personal pronouns, possessive pronouns, demonstrative pronouns “THIS” and “THAT”
  • numbers 0 – 999

  • As an additional study material, we recommend elementary and pre-intermediate level text-books, namely those issued by „Cambridge University Press“ and „Oxford University Press“, focussed on general English.
